Telluride Destination Information - Nestled at the base of vast steep-sided mountains, TELLURIDE , 120 miles northwest of Durango on Hwy-145, is located in one of the most picturesque valleys in the Rockies. A former mining village, in the 1880s the town was briefly home to the young Butch Cassidy, who robbed his first bank here in 1889.
These days Telluride is better known as the home of a top-class ski resort that rivals Aspen , as the prime winter destination for the stars. It has; however, achieved this status without losing its character. Visitors can enjoy a stroll down Main Street which offers fantastic shops, restaurants and nightlife. Preserved as a National Historic District , the town of Telluride offers beautiful Victorian style houses and historic buildings from the mining days.
Unique to Telluride is the Mountain Village, which is located two miles above the town. Visitors located in the Mountain Village can enjoy a free and scenic gondola ride down into town which runs year round. During the summer, the hiking opportunities are excellent; one three-mile round-trip walk leads from the head of the valley, where the highway ends at Pioneer Mill, up to the 365ft Bridal Veil Falls , the largest in Colorado.
